Bunkuany a recently discovered sacred site in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta as many call it the Bunkuany Lost City because of it’s similarities with the Lost City archeological site which is much further into the mountains, Bunkuany has the same style and somewhat similar stone terraces and actually served the Tayrona Tribes as a sacred site according to current understanding of this site. So it was never a City but more a place of pilgrimage where tribe members went to solve life’s problems during the tour we will explain more about what was going on here in the past, it has a very interesting history. The Hiking trail towards Bunkuany takes more or less 2 hours and crosses creeks and is mostly going through the forrest where you can observe different flora and fauna

The Bunkuany hiking trail is a stunning one-day adventure that offers a glimpse into the beauty of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Along the trail, you’ll cross the Río Piedra, a mountain river filled with rocks and flowing with crystal-clear, fresh water that eventually makes its way to the ocean. As you journey through sections of lush rainforest, you’ll have the chance to spot diverse wildlife species, and your guide will highlight unique flora and fauna native to the region.
The trail also passes by an organic farm, abundant with a variety of fruits. If you’re lucky, the kind owner might share some fresh produce with you. As you continue, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views before reaching the archaeological site of Bunkuany—ancient ruins once used by the Tayrona people, including the Kogui and Arhuaco tribes. Along the way, you may also see cattle grazing in the fields, adding a pastoral charm to the experience.
The hike provides a satisfying workout as you navigate the mountainous terrain, so being in moderate physical shape is recommended. For those who appreciate history and culture, this trek is a perfect way to explore the legacy of Colombia’s indigenous peoples.
An extra highlight of the trip is the opportunity to relax in the natural pools formed by mountain streams on the grounds of Bunkuany—perfect for a refreshing bath or swim after your hike.
We’ll meet in Calabazo, a well-connected town easily accessible from both Santa Marta and Palomino. Local buses run every 12 minutes from these two locations, making it convenient to reach. Upon arrival, our local guide will be waiting to welcome you. After a brief introduction, we’ll begin the hike, which typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete
Here at the Bunkuany grounds, we’ll take a well-deserved break and enjoy a delicious local lunch, which is included in the tour. Restrooms are also available at this spot. Afterward, we’ll continue toward the archaeological site, which was discovered by a local farmer from Calabazo.
Your guide will share the fascinating history of the site as you begin climbing the ancient stone steps. These stairs lead to the terraces that once served as a sacred space for the Tayrona tribes. Once at the top, you can explore the area, soak in the tranquil atmosphere, and capture some memorable photos.
We’ll also point out nearby streams and natural pools where you can take a refreshing dip if you wish
After taking in the beauty, serenity, and sacred atmosphere of Bunkuany, we’ll begin our hike back to Calabazo. Once we arrive, this memorable day tour will come to an end.
