  • Tayrona Park Entrance El Zaino / Calabazo

Tayrona National Park in Colombia is renowned for its stunning hiking and horseback trails. Most visitors enter through the main entrance, El Zaino, where a well-trodden path leads to the park’s gorgeous beaches. This trail is easy to navigate without a guide due to its clear markings and the number of fellow hikers along the way, making it ideal for independent exploration.

That said, some travelers opt to hire a guide even on this straightforward route. Guided tours provide a deeper understanding of the park’s rich biodiversity, with fascinating insights into its unique flora, fauna, and cultural history, enhancing the overall experience.

The Calabazo entrance to Tayrona National Park offers a more rustic and adventurous alternative for exploring its beauty. From here, you can embark on a hike to Cabo San Juan del Guia, the park’s iconic beach, celebrated worldwide for its breathtaking scenery and postcard-perfect views.

This route is longer and slightly more challenging than the one from El Zaino, but it’s still manageable without a guide, as hikers take this path daily. However, choosing a guide can significantly enhance your experience, ensuring you stay on track and get the most out of your journey (don’t worry—encounters with jaguars are exceedingly rare!).

Our experienced guides are passionate about sharing their knowledge of Tayrona’s rich history, flora, and fauna. They’ll turn your trek into a deeper exploration of the park’s wonders.

What to Expect

What to Expect on Your Tayrona National Park Adventure: El Zaino vs. Calabazo Tours

Tayrona National Park offers two distinct entrances, each with its own unique experience. Whether you choose the El Zaino or Calabazo route, you’re in for an unforgettable adventure. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from both options:

Option 1: El Zaino Entrance – Easy, Scenic, and Relaxing

Duration: 3–4 hours (round trip)
Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate

Trail Highlights:

  • Easy Access to the Beaches: The El Zaino entrance offers a well-maintained, clearly marked trail that leads you directly to the park’s famous beaches, like Arrecifes and La Piscina. The path is well-traveled, so you’ll enjoy meeting fellow hikers along the way. It’s perfect for those looking for a relaxed and scenic walk through lush forested areas.
  • Beautiful Coastal Views: As you walk, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Caribbean coastline, with glimpses of white sandy beaches framed by turquoise waters and tropical vegetation.
  • Wildlife and Flora: Along the trail, expect to encounter a variety of wildlife, such as monkeys, colorful birds, and unique plants. With a guide, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the local flora and fauna.
  • Optional Guide for Deeper Insight: Although the trail is easy to follow independently, many visitors opt for a guide to learn about the park’s biodiversity, history, and the indigenous cultures of the region. A guide can also enrich the experience by pointing out hidden gems and offering safety tips along the way.

End Point: The trail ends at La Piscina, where you can relax on the beach and enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters.

Option 2: Calabazo Entrance – Adventurous, Off-the-Beaten-Path

Duration: 6–8 hours (round trip)
Difficulty Level: Moderate to challenging

Trail Highlights:

  • A More Challenging Hike: The Calabazo entrance offers a more rugged and adventurous trail, perfect for those looking for a deeper, more immersive experience. Expect a moderate to challenging hike through dense jungle, crossing streams and climbing hills, offering a true sense of adventure.
  • Rich Biodiversity and Views: As you hike, you’ll encounter Tayrona’s diverse flora and fauna, including monkeys, tropical birds, and exotic plants. Your guide will help you spot hidden wildlife and provide valuable insights into the park’s ecosystems.
  • Solitude and Peace: This route is less crowded than El Zaino, so you’ll have a more peaceful and intimate experience with nature, away from the more touristy areas.

End Point: The hike concludes at Cabo San Juan del Guia, one of Tayrona’s most famous beaches, where you can enjoy the serene beauty of its crescent-shaped bay. The turquoise waters and sandy shores are perfect for a well-deserved swim and relaxation after your adventure.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • El Zaino Entrance: If you’re looking for a shorter, easier hike with stunning beach views and a more laid-back experience, El Zaino is the ideal option. It’s perfect for those wanting to enjoy the park’s beauty at a relaxed pace, with the option to go independently or with a guide for extra insight.

  • Calabazo Entrance: For those seeking a more adventurous experience, Calabazo offers a longer and more challenging hike through the park’s remote trails, with the opportunity to discover hidden corners of Tayrona. It’s perfect for more experienced hikers or those looking for a deeper, more immersive experience in the park.

  • No matter which route you choose, both options promise an unforgettable adventure in one of Colombia’s most stunning natural wonders.
